ΒΙΟΓΡΑΦΙΚΟ ΣΗΜΕΙΩΜΑ - BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Ο Δημήτριος Καπετανάκης γεννήθηκε στη Σμύρνη το 1912. Μετά τη Μικρασιατική Καταστροφή το 1922 η οικογένειά του βρέθηκε στην Αθήνα. Ο Καπετανάκης φοίτησε στο Πανεπιστήμιο Αθηνών Πολιτικές Επιστήμες και Οικονομικά και συνέχισε τις μεταπτυχιακές του σπουδές στο Πανεπιστήμιο της Χαϊδελβέργης. Από εκεί έλαβε το διδακτορικό του δίπλωμα το 1934 στη φιλοσοφία. Κατά τη διάρκεια των σπουδών του στη Γερμανία συνέγραψε αρκετά φιλοσοφικά δοκίμια στην ελληνική γλώσσα. Ενδεικτικά αναφέρονται τα  Έρως και Χρόνος, Η Μυθολογία του Ωραίου, Από τον Αγώνα του ψυχικώς μόνου. Το 1939 βρέθηκε στην Αγγλία, έχοντας λάβει μια τριετή υποτροφία σπουδών από το Βρετανικό Συμβούλιο. Στο Πανεπιστήμιο του Κέμπριτζ βρέθηκε να εργάζεται υπό την επίβλεψη του George Humphrey Wolferstan (Dadie) Rylands, ενός από τους πιο γνωστούς ερευνητές του έργου του Σέξπηρ στη Βρετανία. Στη συνέχεια ο Καπετανάκης εργάστηκε για ένα μικρό διάστημα στο Τμήμα Τύπου της ελληνικής πρεσβείας  στο Λονδίνο.

Κατά τη διάρκεια της παραμονής του στην Αγγλία έγραψε κυρίως κριτικά λογοτεχνικά δοκίμια πάνω στα έργα των Proust, Rimbaud, Stephan George, Dostoevsky, Thomas Gray, Horace Walpole και Charlotte Brontë. Σχεδίαζε επίσης τη συγγραφή μιας φιλοσοφικής εργασίας στο έργο του Πλάτωνα και του Kierkegaard. Γνωρίστηκε με σημαντικές μορφές την αγγλικής λογοτεχνίας όπως την Edith Sitwell και τον  William Plomer, καθώς και με τον ποιητή, επιμελητή και εκδότη John Lehmann. Ο John Lehmann δώρισε στα Αρχεία της Γενναδείου Βιβλιοθήκης τα προσωπικά έγγραφα, τις σημειώσεις και την αλληλογραφία του Καπετανάκη που πέρασαν στην κατοχή του μετά το θάνατο του ποιητή το 1944. Ασθένησε σοβαρά το 1942 και άφησε την τελευταία του πνοή στο νοσοκομείο Westminster στο Λονδίνο. Ενταφιάστηκε στο West Norwood Cemetery. Το σύνολο του έργου του στην αγγλική γλώσσα εκδόθηκε to 1947 με τον τίτλο Demetrios Capetanakis: A Greek Poet in England (επιμέλεια John Lehmann).
