Η Γεννάδειος Βιβλιοθήκη εγκαινιάστηκε στις 23 Απριλίου 1926. Επιλέχτηκε η γιορτή του Αγίου Γεωργίου για να τιμηθεί η μνήμη του πατέρα του Ιωάννη Γενναδίου. Κατά σύμπτωση το 1995 η UNESCO όρισε αυτή τη μέρα ως Διεθνή Ημέρα Βιβλίου.
