ABSTRACT:

A fragment of an inscription (Agora I 5178) found in the excavation of the Athenian Agora in 1938 consists of two partially preserved faces of a three-sided monument of the third quarter of the 4th century B.C. The nature and purpose of this monument are unknown. It bears lists of Athenians and metics, grouped by phylai. At least four phylai are involved, but not in the “official” Kleisthenic order. The names, patronymics, and demotics of at least 31 Athenians survive in whole or in part, together with the names and demes of residence of three metics. Two patronymics are new to Athens.
