ABSTRACT:

Analysis of the relationship between the content of Athenian inscriptions and their physical setting demonstrates that the site of an inscription's publication had relevance to the content of that inscription. In keeping with Athenian epigraphic practice, the texts of the Oath of the Athenian Ephebes and the so-called Oath of Plataia on a 4th-century B.C. stele from Acharnai were ideologically related to their setting in this deme. The author argues that the unique cult of Ares and Athena Areia in Acharnai, the martial character attributed to the Acharnians, Attic topography, and historical resonances with the Persian Wars all contributed to the choice of these texts for display in Acharnai.
