The early excavations of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens at the site of the Temple of Hera high above the Argive plain revealed antiquities from two distinct periods; fragmentary temple architecture and sculpture of the 5th century B.C. (including a fine head, presumed to be Hera herself) and a mass of Archaic terracottas, bronzes, ivories, gold rosettes, and coins (probably debris from the destruction of the first temple on the site).
