From the founding of the ASCSA in 1881 to the outbreak of war in 1939 and the subsequent involvement of School members in military life, this surprisingly outspoken book describes the early history of one of the most important American cultural institutions overseas. The book is organized chronologically, divided into the regimes of four Chairmen of the Managing Committee—the School’s governance body. Appendixes describe an early member’s first year at the School and the experiences of another member as a captain in the Greek army.
