Research Topic: At Death's Door: Grave Stelai as Votive Thresholds in Classical Greece

Steph Polos is a fourth-year PhD candidate in Mediterranean Art and Archaeology (Department of Art) at University of Virginia. Her research centers on funerary art, material culture, and practices in archaic and classical Greece, as well as rites of passage and liminal figures and spaces. She has been a member of previous American School programs (summer session, 2016; Agora Excavations, 2019, 2022; summer seminar “Thanatopsis,” 2022), as well as excavations in Pompeii (Via Consolare Project, 2018) and Israel (Caesarea Coastal Archaeological Project, 2023).
