At the edge of Chaos Hole

The program for Regular Members got underway soon after we returned from the AIA/APA meetings in Philadelphia. We had a session on the Akropolis in spectacularly clear but very cold weather, and then a day-trip to Thorikos and Lavrion. We discussed the theater at Thorikos, the Mycenaean tholoi and the deme site, and went “off-road” to see the Doric stoa. At Lavrion we chased down several ore washeries, where Will Bruce explained the procedures for extracting silver. We visited the Chaos Hole, an impressively enormous sinkhole. On the Akropolis again we studied the Erechtheion and the foundations of the Old Temple to Athena, and the Temple of Roma and Augustus. On our next day-trip we went to Sounion, Cape Zoster and the Vari Cave, where all had the courage to make the descent. Now we are focusing on the slopes of the Akropolis, and we’ve had some hard rains on site reports (too wet to bring out the camera!). Our day-trip to Rhamnous, Oropos and Aulis, though, featured gorgeous weather for us as we explored the three venerable sanctuaries.
