The American School of Classical Studies at Athens is very pleased to announce the establishment of a new Regular Member Fellowship in memory of Fowler Merle-Smith.

Fowler Merle-Smith (“Mike”) was born in New York City in 1926. He attended the Brooks School in Andover, Mass, and then Princeton University (class of 1952) where he majored in modern languages. After serving in the Marine Corps and at Iwo Jima during World War II, he taught for two years in Hawaii. A two-year trip in 1957 around the world on a yacht introduced him to Greece, which remained a favorite country. His love of teaching took him to the Buckley School in New York City where he taught and served as administrator. He and his wife Annette moved to Princeton in 1964 where he was the head of the middle school of the newly founded Princeton Day School. He remained at that institution until his retirement in 1983 as a teacher of 5th grade history and social studies, with an emphasis on ancient Greece. Fowler Merle-Smith passed away in 1998 and is survived by his wife, Annette, a resident of Princeton, and a daughter, Margaret.

In recognition of Mike’s deep love of the ancient Greek world and imparting that interest to students, The Fowler Merle-Smith Regular Member Fellowship was established beginning in 2008 by generous endowment gifts from the Fowler Merle-Smith Family Charitable Lead Trust. The Fellowship will be awarded beginning in the 2011-2012 academic year.
