An External Review of the Wiener Laboratory took place on April 26th and 27th. The review was commissioned by the Managing Committee to look ahead as the Lab is nearing the end of its second decade and prior to building the new laboratory. Committee members Dr. Melinda Zeder (Smithsonian Institution) and Prof. Martin Jones (University of Cambridge) performed the review (another member of the Committee, Michael Galaty of Millsap’s College, could not attend). Both are pictured here with Prof. Sotiris K. Manolis (University of Athens) standing in front of the Athens’ Collection, which is the modern human comparative collection that was begun at the Wiener Laboratory by former Angel Fellow, Anna Lagia.
The International Congress on Archaeological Sciences of the eastern Mediterranean and the Near East was held in Paphos, Cyprus from April 29th–May 1st. Participants from the conference included a number of Wiener Laboratory researchers, including, from left to right: Dr. Evi Margaritis (former Environmental Studies Fellow), Dr. Tatiana Theodoropoulou (Faunal Fellow), Dr. Sherry Fox (Director and former Angel Fellow), Dr. Anastasia Papathanasiou (former Angel Fellow with the Ephorate of Palaeoanthropology and Speleology of Southern Greece), Dr. Sireen El Zaatari (Angel Fellow), Dr. Frossini Vika (former Research Associate) and Ms. Katerina Papayianni (former Faunal Fellow and Advanced Felllow).
On Wednesday, May 12, a Fitch-Wiener Labs Seminar took place at the Fitch Lab. Presenting was 2009–2010 Wiener Laboratory Faunal Fellow Dr. Tatiana Theodoropoulou (PhD, Sorbonne, University of Paris), whose talk was entitled “Fishbones in the lake: reconstructing fishing activities and daily life in the prehistoric lake settlement of Dispilio, Kastoria (N.
