On the initiative of Alfonso Lucini Mateo, Ambassador of Spain to Athens, and his wife, Carmen Serrano de Haro, architect of the Spanish Ministry of Public Treasury, a small group of Spanish intellectuals visited the Archives of the Gennadius Library on the evening of May 14th, 2015. Carmen Asenjo of the Ortega y Gasset Foundation, Beatriz Rodríguez, Head of Institutional Relations at the Cervantes Institute, Fernando Rodríguez Lafuente, former Director General of the Cervantes Institute, and Daniel Martín Mayorga, General Manager of the Royal Spanish Academy, came straight to the American School from the Athens airport with one request: to see the diaries of Heinrich Schliemann. With the guidance of Alfonso and Carmen, they read parts of diary A 4, where Schliemann records in Spanish his journey to Southern France and Spain in 1859 (especially his description of San Ildenfonso). Maria Georgopoulou and I also shared with our special guests other parts of the large Schliemann archive, including the Mycenae and Troy diaries.
Here is part of Alfonso Lucini Mateo's and Carmen Serrano de Haro's transcription of Schliemann's description of San Ildefonso (a small town north of Madrid, also known as "the Versailles of Spain"):
"Salimos ayer a las 11 por la noche de Madrid y llegamos aquí hoy por la mañana a las 7. Teníamos buenos asientos de berlina por los cuales sin embargo debíamos pagar 8 reales cada uno. En vez de encontrar aquí-como esperaba- a un sitio real encontré a una miseria. La casa real asemeja antes a una casa ordinaria de dueño de aldea que a un palacio real de verano. En el suelo-cuarto bajo al menos-todo está sucia (sic) y parece en decadencia. Se dice que los cuartos superiores están arreglados con elegancia pero no alcancé verlos. No pudimos conseguir el permiso de ver los jardines estando ellos hoy cerrados por motivo del almuerzo que da la Reina para el que están convidados más de 300 personas. Fuimos pues por un ómnibus a razón de ½ real a Segobia que es una de las más antiguas ciudades de España..."
