Friends, colleagues and students gathered at Dionysos taverna last night to pay tribute to retiring numismatist Orestes Zervos. Orestes has been the numismatist of Corinth Excavations since 1980 and has curated a collection of nearly 100,000 coins. Director Guy Sanders offered a gift in the form of a walking stick, which is intricately carved with a rams head on one side and St. George slaying the dragon on the other, for Orestes’ topographical expeditions. Also on hand was Lakis Papafotiou, the deputy county commissioner and Orestes’ friend since joining the staff. Orestes will continue working on personal numismatic projects and split his time between Ancient Corinth and his family home in Corfu.
