The American School of Classical Studies at Athens is pleased to announce the publication of a new edition of Gods and Heroes in the Athenian Agora (Agora Picture Book 19), by John McK. Camp II.

Religion permeated all aspects of civic life in ancient Athens, and its material traces—shrines, temples, altars, and dedications—are visible throughout the Agora. This booklet explores the archaeological and historical evidence for religious activity in the civic center of Athens, examining the worship of major Olympian deities as well as more localized and lesser-known cults. Special attention is given to heroes such as Theseus, one of the legendary founders of Athens, whose veneration often rivaled or even surpassed that of the Olympians in popular practice. Drawing on the finds from the Agora excavations, this study offers an accessible examination of the intersection between civic space and sacred practice. Originally published in 1980, this updated edition features stunning color photographs throughout and is available in both English and modern Greek (the latter translated by Eirini Dimitriadou).

The Agora Picture Book series offers a captivating view of the Athenian Agora, one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece. Centered around a distinct theme, each volume explores the fascinating objects and monuments uncovered at the heart of ancient Athens, revealing the city’s rich history and illuminating the daily life of its residents. With a focus on visual storytelling, these concise yet informative booklets are perfect for readers of all ages, combining vivid imagery with historical context to bring the ancient world to life. Camp’s Gods and Heroes in the Athenian Agora marks the second new release in the ASCSA’s initiative to reissue this important series in updated, full-color editions with Greek translations, allowing a new generation to enjoy these timeless classics.
