Robert A. McCabe, President, ASCSA Board of Trustees
Dear Friends of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens,
Many of you know that Irene Romano has accepted a prestigious academic position at the University of Arizona. While we were pleased and proud of this appointment, it left a major void in the School’s Princeton leadership.
We are very happy to announce that Mary Emerson will be succeeding Irene. Mary is an alumna of the American School and has most recently been the Associate Director of Development at the Frick Collection in New York. She has previously been the Executive Director of the American Friends of Winchester College in England and has held positions at the Bruce Museum of Arts and Sciences in Greenwich, Connecticut; the Metropolitan Museum of Art; and the Hewitt School in New York. She holds an AB degree in Classics, cum laude, from Harvard University and has pursued graduate studies in ancient art and archaeology at the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University. She attended the Summer Session at the School as an undergraduate, and has excavated at Halieis and Metapontum.
Irene will be the Deputy Director of the Arizona State Museum and a faculty member at the University in anthropology and art history. Her husband David has been named the Karabots Professor of Greek Archaeology at the University. The School is very grateful to Irene for her hard work over nearly six years, for her constructive leadership, and for the positive impact she has had on many aspects of the School.
Mary will be spending some time in Princeton in coming weeks and will assume her full duties as Executive Director USA in early March.
