The new Acropolis Museum was opened to the public on June 21st, 2009. The museum was officially inaugurated the night before on June 20th fulfilling a dream envisioned by Constaninos Karamalis and Melinna Merkouri that has taken over three decades to achieve. Invitations to the celebrations inside the museum were reserved for the most important dignitaries but the general public was treated to a sound and light show that was projected on to the eastern fascade of the new museum and on surrounding buildings. Members of the American School were amongst the crowds watching the show from the surrounding sidewalks and another was able to find a rooftop to capture some of the magic of the evening.
