Mitropoulos Medal
Gennadius Librarian, Irini Solomonidi, with first winner, Musheng Chen
The 13th annual Dimitris Mitropoulos International Competition, organized by the Orchestra of Colors in collaboration with the Athens Concert Hall, took place on November 6, 2009. 75 entries were submitted to this year’s competition for original composition for symphony orchestra. The submissions of the five finalists were performed by the Orchestra of Colors under the direction of Miltos Logiadis. The international jury selected the following composers as prize winners: Musheng Chen from China, Manuel Martínez Burgos from Spain, and Andrej Slezák from Slovakia-Hungary. They were presented with a portrait of Dimitris Mitropoulos by the artist Iannis Psychopaidis. Like every year since the inception of the Mitropoulos Competition the Gennadius Library offered the first prize winner a commemorative medal by the sculptor Theodoros Papayannis. This year’s award was presented by Gennadius Librarian, Ms. Irini Solomonidi, featured in this photo with the first winner. The Library houses the Dimitris Mitropoulos Archive; the musician’s personal papers and manuscripts were donated in 1963 to the Gennadius Library by his friend, Kaiti Katsoyanni, and his friend and executor, James A. Dixon.
