Interview with Dr. Margaret Miles
The one and only Hephaisteion!
How does a 2,500-year-old temple become the best-preserved doric temple in Greece?
In the latest episode of Agora Scholars Speak, we welcome Dr. Margaret Miles, Edward A. Dickson Professor Emerita of Art History and Classics at the University of California, Irvine.
Together, we explore the Hephaisteion: why Hephaistos and Athena shared this temple, why it was built on the Kolonos Agoraios, how its architects selected and worked its materials, and what visitors in antiquity would have seen on its sculpted exterior and richly decorated interior.
And, of course, we tackle one of the Agora's greatest identity crises: if this is the Hephaisteion, why did generations of Athenians call it the "Theseion"?
