Excavations in the Nezi Field in Ancient Corinth, 2010
July 2, 2010
From early April to June 30, Corinth Excavations excavated for a fourth season in the Byzantine levels of Nezi Field, which is south of the South Stoa. Three separate training sessions were held and each session comprised three weeks of excavation followed by a week of study and clean up. Area supervisors once again consisted of student members of the ASCSA, most of whom are featured in the photos below. They included Johanna Best, Dom Galante, Charlotte Maxwell-Jones, Lincoln Nemetz-Carlson, Rob Nichols, Jess Paga, Cameron Pearson, Mark Piskorowski, Kelcy Sagstetter, Christina Trego, John Tully, and Flint Dibble. Associate members Marty Wells and Scott Gallimore served as Field Directors. Wells also identified and catalogued all bone from this year’s excavation and worked on material from a Frankish well dug in 2008-9. Members Chris Cloke, Joe Groves, Cat Person, and Katie Nicols (spouse of member Rob Nichols) worked in the museum on various projects ranging from cataloguing Byzantine pottery to Numismatic study. Member Karen Laurence worked with the excavation archives from the Forum Southwest area and Sarah James assisted in the pot sheds. Douglas Mullen, an architecture grad of Texas A & M and a student of Kevin Glowaki and Nancy Klein, volunteered for the first session recording architecture. Mark Hammond, Jason Harris, and Lindi Gallimore concluded work on the Kress Coin Project and helped with the newly excavated coins. Katerina Ragkou processed soil samples and operated the water sieve. We thank all of this year’s participants and our local ephoreias for a great season.
