The American School fielded seven runners in the 31st Athens Classic Marathon on Sunday, 10 November, 2013. Among the over 11,000 participants were Assistant Director Nick Blackwell (in green, below); Associate Members Jake Morton (in red shorts, at right), Lily Stoner, and Kyle Jazwa; and Regular Member Sarah Rous. Walking the race were Senior Associate Member Richard Bidgood and Professor Ann Steiner. An enthusiastic crowd of supporters cheered them on and held up appropriate banners of encouragement.
The 42,195 m marathon race is held annually in Athens and was born by a true historic and heroic event: a news-bearing foot soldier from ancient Athens who announced — with his last words — the victory of the Greeks against the Persians during the Marathon Battle in 490 B.C.
