Aristotle’s Art of Rhetoric
New Gennadeion trustee Professor Nicholas Theocarakis presented a gift for the Gennadius Library: a first London edition (Edwardi Griffini, 1619) of Aristotle’s Rhetoric containing the three books of the Art of Rhetoric and dedicated to Charles I, with the king’s coat of arms engraved opposite the dedication page.
The book presents the text in Greek and Latin and contains the signature of the first owner “Tho. Preston,” a most interesting name. He was probably a Benedictine monk (1563-1640) who wrote several controversial treatises under the name Roger Widdrington.
This generous gift is a wonderful new addition to the rare book collection of the Library.
