On June 4, 2016, the American School of Classical Studies at Athens will celebrate the opening of the Malcolm H. Wiener Laboratory for Archaeological Science, a state-of-the-art facility that will be the preeminent center for high level archaeological science for the Mediterranean and Southeastern Europe.

The opening is a historic day in the 135-year history of the American School and was made possible by the visionary philanthropy of Malcolm H. Wiener, Chairman of the American School’s Board of Trustees, whose uncommon vision has supported the most forward-looking aspects of the School’s research mission.

His Excellency, the President of the Hellenic Republic, Mr. Prokopios Pavlopoulos will inaugurate the Wiener Laboratory with many dignitaries in attendance. The event will be hosted by the American School’s Board of Trustees and Directors, and is preceded by an Open House from 2:00 to 5:00 pm.

The inauguration is an invitation-only event but you can watch the proceedings  live on June 4 at 6:00 pm Athens time.

There will also be a pre-inauguration lecture by Dr. Melinda Zeder (Smithsonian Institution), entitled "Tales from the Wiener Lab: Contributions of the Archaeological Sciences to Classical Studies," on June 3 at 7:00 pm. Click here for details.

Under the Directorship of Dr. Panagiotis Karkanas (above right), the Wiener Laboratory not only provides exceptional facilities and equipment but also extensive comparative collections, and resources for independent scientific research. The lab is poised to become a worldwide leader in the field of archaeological science and the best place for studying archaeological materials related to the ancient Greek world in its broadest sense. The Wiener Laboratory is already involved in long-range, multidimensional programs of research focused primarily on human osteology, faunal analysis, and a range of geoarchaeological and palaeoenvironmental research.
