Annual Malcolm H. Wiener Lecture

Matthew Collins, University of York - University of Copenhagen
“The Prospect for Ancient Proteins in Archaeology”

Professor Matthew Collins is working on the use of ancient proteins to solve archaeological problems. His research team has achieved results in the field of amino acid racemization dating as a reliable tool. He is a pioneer in the study of the development and spread of lactation in North-East Europe from the Bronze Age to the Iron Age using new immunological methods in the determination of milk proteins in ancient pottery. In addition, his team is pioneering successful ancient protein sequencing and has recently focused on developing a rapid method of identifying animal species and identifying pathological changes.
