This section provides information about field projects (excavations, surveys, and various studies) undertaken or supported by the ASCSA. It should be noted that the majority of the records from the excavations at the Athenian Agora and Corinth are stored in the Stoa of Attalos and the Corinth Museum respectively.

Summary: Charles Waldstein, Director of the American School and Professor of Art, excavated at the site of the Argive Heraeum with the assistance of Richard Norton, H.S. Washington and two students of the School, J.C. Hoppin and J. Alden from 1892-1895. John Caskey and Pierre Amandry of the French School cleared a 7th-6th cent. B.C. deposit in 1949. The collection consists of Caskey’s excavation notebook, plans and drawings, photos and negatives, notes, sketches. Also, a photocopy of three of Charles Waldstein’s notebooks (1893, 1894, 1897, originals in King’s College Library) and 23 prints from Waldstein’s excavations bought from Cambridge University Library. Included is a set of copy prints of sculpture published by Rebecca Wood [Robinson] as a School paper in 1952.

Title: Armatova (Elean Pylos) Excavation Records

Summary: The excavation at Armatova headed by J. Coleman of the University of Colorado was part of a larger collaboration between the Greek Archaeological Service and the foreign schools in the area of the upper Peneios valley in Elis, where a dam was being constructed. The collection contains duplicate inventory cards, photocopies of topographical plans (including copies of Αεροτοπογραφικοί χάρτες εγγειοβελτιωτικών έργων ανασυγκροτήσεως του Υπουργείου Δημοσίων Έργων, κλ. 1:20000), plans and drawings. Summary: The excavation at Colophon was headed by Hetty Goldman and sponsored by ASCSA and the Fogg Art Museum of Harvard College (1922 and 1925). The first expedition in 1922 was directed by H. Goldman and Carl W. Blegen and was conducted while the area was under Greek administration. In 2015 new material was donated to the ASCSA Archives from the Department of Classical and Near Eastern Archaeology at Bryn Mawr College. The collection contains excavation notebooks and inventories, black and white photographs and negatives, architectural drawings and plans, lantern slides, research notes and later correspondence.

ERETRIA

Summary: The excavations at Eretria began in 1891 under the direction of ASCSA Director Charles Waldstein and during the latter's absences under Rufus B. Richardson (Annual Professor in 1890-1891, later ASCSA Director 1893-1903). Three sites were explored, the acropolis, the theater, and the graves. During the first season (1891) Waldstein thought he had discovered the "tomb of Aristotle." In 1892 the eastern half of the theater's orchestra was cleared and its correct diameter was established. In 1894, Richardson uncovered the foundations of a temple, several water conduits, bases of dedicatory plaques, as well as part of the gymnasium. The collection contains excavation notebooks, drawings, and photos.

Title: Eutresis Excavation Records

Summary: Excavations at the site of Eutresis were originally conducted by Hetty Goldman (1924-1927), and later re-examined by John L. Caskey (1958, University of Cincinnati). Although Goldman had noticed the mound of Eutresis already in 1911, she was not able to excavate the site until 1924 after her major undertakings at Halae and Colophon. Eutresis was the only of Goldman’s major excavations not to be interrupted by war. Small supplementary excavation took place in 1958 under the direction of J.L. Caskey. The Eutresis Excavation Records contain field notebooks, architectural plans, photos and glass lanterns. In 2004 and 2015 the collection was supplemented by material donated by Bryn Mawr College, Department of Classical and Near Eastern Archaeology from H. Goldman’s 1924-1927 excavations of the site, mostly photographs and glass lantern slides (Acc # 2004.08 and 2015.01).

Summary: The excavations at the site of Halae in Lokris were conducted by Hetty Goldman and Alice L. Walker (Kosmopoulos) from 1911-1914 and in 1921, 1923, 1931. In 1921 Piet de Jong made the drawings of architectural details and the general plan, while in 1931 Goldman and Walker were assisted by Virginia Grace. Renewed excavations took place in the 1990s as part of the Cornell Halai and East Lokris Project (CHELP) under the direction of John E. Coleman. The Halae Excavations Archive contains excavation notebooks, reports, plans and drawings, photographs/lantern slides & negatives, correspondence and records associated with the study and publication of the material, such as inventory cards and manuscripts of publications.

Summary: Ikarion, an Attic deme on the northern slopes of Mt Pentele was excavated by Carl D. Buck in 1888 (the inscriptions were published by A.C. Merriam, who first located the site on the directions given by A. Milchhoefer). W. Biers and T. Boyd returned to the site in 1981 for cleaning operations on the occasion of the celebration of the ASCSA centennial. The collection contains excavation notebooks and inventories, black and white photographs and negatives (ASCSA Archaeological Photographic Collection AT 15-56, 69-71), architectural drawings and plans, lantern slides, research notes and later correspondence. Summary: The site of Koukounari near Ikarion in Attica was to be excavated by A. C. Merriam, but he died in 1895 and R. Richardson, Director of the ASCSA, headed the project. Among the finds, there was an important sacrificial calendar. The collection contains Richardson’s field notebook and notes on inscriptions, photos and negatives (ASCSA Archaeological Photographic Collection AT 72-78). There is also a letter to R. Richardson by the general secretary of the Committee on the Olympic Games (25/1/189?) about his participation on the committee for the restoration of the Stadium.

Summary: The excavations at the sites of Kyparissi and Atalante in East Lokris were conducted by the American School of Classical Studies under the direction of Carl W. Blegen and C. D. Buck of the University of Chicago in a brief campaign in the spring of 1911 hoping to identify ancient Opous. The records contain 4 field notebooks on work in Kyparissi, Atalante, and Chiliadou, a journal of excavations in Eastern Lokris, a report by C. A. R. Sanborn, a manuscript by Carl W. Blegen (see Carl W. Blegen Papers, Box 1, folder 1), correspondence (including a proposal by C.A.R. Sanborn and A. C. Johnson), financial accounts, photos and negatives (ASCSA Archaeological Photographic Collection N 9-20; N 64-93) and plans and blueprints by C.A. R. Sanborn (with additions by W. B. Dinsmoor in 1916).

Summary: Excavations at the site of Nemea were conducted by Bert H. Hill and Carl W. Blegen in 1924 and for three seasons with funds provided through the University of Cincinnati. Work continued in 1927 by Benjamin D. Meritt, while Charles K. Williams undertook the final publication of the temple and further exploration of the site in 1964. In 1974 excavations at the site were renewed under the direction of Stephen G. Miller (University of California at Berkeley). The collection consists of more than 200 architectural drawings by Lewey T. Lands for B. H. Hill’s study of the temple of Zeus at Nemea (1930s-1940s) with Charles K. Williams’ notes (1963-1964), reviewed plans, and new drawings made in the 1960s. There are also army maps, aerial photos, topographical drawings as well as drawings related to land expropriation. Very few profiles of pottery and photos.

Summary: H.S. Washington excavated at his own expense under Waldstein's supervision on the acropolis of Phlious in 1892. In 1924 and 1925, the excavation was headed by C. Blegen. In 1970 William R. Biers (University of Missouri) published the results of the early excavations and conducted supplementary excavations for three seasons. The collection contains transcriptions of field notebooks (1924), Phlious Notebook 17B (1976) on the Roman Aqueduct (workbook) [mostly measurements], original drawings (1924, 1972), photos and negatives [1924] (ASCSA P 12-27, P 68-87; GenPh N 0286-0320, CN 0027), photographic albums (1970, 1972-1973), field sketches (1970-1972), season reports (1970-1972), aerial photographs (1970-1972), paper squeezes of inscriptions, copies of excavation permits. Summary: The excavations at the site of Koroni or Prasiai (Porto Raphti) in Attica were conducted under the auspices of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens under the direction of Eugene Vanderpool with the assistance of James R. McCredie and Arthur Steinberg in 1960. In 1959 the visible remains on the peninsula were mapped. Cornelius Vermeule joined the expedition for a few days and made a study of the seated statue of Roman times on the Raphti Island published separately. The Porto Raphti (Koroni) Excavation Archive contains one field notebook (with couple of notes in back pocket), one notebook recording finds (with notes in back pocket), photographs (one photograph album and loose photographs), plates for Hesperia article, index cards with photos of coins and identifications, an offprint of the Hesperia article, the site-plan of Prasiai by architect Martin R. Jones (xerox) and pottery drawings. Jerry J. Pollitt drew the profiles of the bowls. The material was published in “Koroni: a Ptolemaic camp on the east coast of Attica”, Hesperia 31 (1962), 26-61.

Summary: Excavations at the site of Prosymna [Argive Heraeum] were conducted by Carl W. Blegen (1925-28). The team excavated mostly tombs on the slopes N and W of the temple, although some trenches were also dug on the temple terrace (see notebook by R.S. Darbishire 1927). The Prosymna Excavation Records contain field notebooks, some of which have been microfilmed, notes, original drawings and watercolors of finds by Piet de Jong, photographs, glass negatives (ASCSA Archaeological Photographic Collection, AH and P series) and correspondence, mostly related to the publication of the excavation by Cambridge University Press. The majority of the photographs is published, although there is a small number which have not been included in the final publication. The collection includes an anthropological report by Carl M. Fürst concerning the skeletons found in the tombs.

Fossum, a watercolored plan of the theater by Trowbridge, a manuscript (16 pages) by A. Fossum and the excavation permits (ASCSA Administrative Records, Box 204/29, folder 3).
